Hindwing has 1 long and 1 short tail. Upperside of both sexes dark brown. Underside of hindwing dark brown with postmedian band of dark dashes edged in white. Blue tail-spot not topped with orange. Wing span is approximately 2.5 to 3.8 cm. Flies from June to August. Caterpillar feeds on oak, walnut, and hickory trees. Adults feed on dogbane and milkweed species mostly. Found in forest areas, forest edges, meadows, and flower gardens. It is a territorial butterfly that will challenge other butterflies invading its territory.

Edible Notes: Butterflies are not generally considered edible and may be poisonous due to the plants they feed on such as dogbane species.
Warnings: Not known to be dangerous.
