Male cardinals are bright red, the females are dull red-brown. The male cardinal fiercely defends its breeding territory from other males. When a male sees its reflection in glass surfaces, it frequently will spend hours fighting the imaginary intruder.

It is found in woodlands, gardens, shrublands, and swamps as well as common in residential areas.
