Odocoileus virginianus

Common Names: White-tailed deer, whitetail
Category: Mammals
Sub-category: Deer

The deer's coat is a reddish-brown in the spring and summer and turns to a grey-brown throughout the fall and winter. The deer can be recognized by the characteristic white underside to its tail. It will raise its tail when it is alarmed to flag the other deer. Males re-grow their antlers every year. About 1 in 10,000 females also have antlers.

Most commonly found in forests, they do frequently wander into residential areas.

Edible Notes: Also known as venison, deer meat is prized by game hunters and gourmands. It is sometimes available in supermarkets and gourmet food stores or can be ordered online.
Warnings: While being a relatively large animal, they are capable of inflicting injury, but they are not typically aggressive and usually avoid humans. If they feel threatened they sometimes stamp their feet as a warning to stay away.
