Wings of this species strongly suffused with yellow or brownish-yellow sparsely patterned with brown.

Adults of this species emerge after the late summer rains and are common in September and early October. It is one of the most conspicuous autumnal crane flies. Adults occur locally in herbaceous growth in lowland woods and edges of woods, particularly in the vicinity of streams.
