Breeding adults are like a smaller sleeker version of common loon. They measure 23 to 29 inches in length, 43 to 50 inches in wingspan and weigh 2.2 to 5.5 lbs. They have a grey head, black throat, white underparts and checkered black-and-white mantle. Non-breeding plumage is drabber with the chin and foreneck white. Its bill is grey or whitish and dagger-shaped.
